“THEY’RE HERE.” Playful at first...but not for long. Little Carol Anne Freeling is whisked into a _spectral void. As her family confronts horrors galore, something else is here too: a new benchmark in Hollywood ghost stories. Producers Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall and director Tobe Hooper head the elite scream team behind this classic chiller. Poltergeist opens with “The Star-Spangled Banner” playing on a television set that’s been left on by the average dad, who fell asleep in front of the TV. The oldest daughter chats on the phone when she’s not supposed to, their middle son has a poster of Alien and every Star Wars toy in the catalog, and their youngest daughter talks to her goldfish while gleefully feeding them an entire tube of fish food. Before the horror hits we’re treated to a slice of Americana: kids racing radio-controlled cars in the streets, guys getting together on Sunday to drink beer and watch the big game, and the Freeling family sitting down for breakfast together before rushing out on their separate ways. This movie introduced the idea to filmgoers everywhere that the dread of death could find us in our homes, even if our homes happened to be in the center of a pretty little street in a quiet little town. With all the elements in place, Poltergeist was like catching lightning in a bottle. It forever changed the horror genre, ushering in a new wave of nightmares that could find you where you lived. Shh, quiet a sec. Did you hear that noise? “They’re here…”
